#SCSSpotlight – Booting It

As the leaders of the Junior School, our Grade 6s are ready to embrace additional opportunities. For starters, they are leading our Grades 1 to 6 girls straight to healthy habits! As an extension of the regular weekly Health Hustle programming at SCS (Junior School students choose between stepping things up with Just Dance, or practicing mindfulness techniques in a quieter space), we also introduced SCS Boot Camp in October! It’s the chance for two different Grade 6 leaders every week to develop a fun, themed boot camp for their fellow Junior School students.

The girls, in collaboration with Grade 6 Teacher Liz Watt, come up with a theme for their fitness session and plot out twelve stations, which are set up in both gyms (Grades 1 to 3 students complete the circuit in one gym; Grades 4 to 6 students in the other.) Small groups have a set amount of time to complete each station.

Our first Boot Camp leaders of 2018, Claire S. and Maxine G., went with “Back to School” as their theme. Their stations included Pencil Plank, Science Skip Rope, Library Lunges, Recess Relays, and Math Mountain Climbers. After receiving a demonstration of what each station entailed, the Junior School spent the next 30 minutes planking, jumping, skipping, and sit up-ping to music that really got their heartrates up! (Popular selections on Claire and Maxine’s playlist: “Havana” by Camila Cabello and “Wolves” by Selena Gomez.)

“Our goal for ‘Back to School’ Boot Camp is to get everyone’s hearts pumping and also get them engaged. We want it to be fun. That’s why every station also has a joke listed, to really get everyone in a positive, happy mood,” explained Claire and Maxine prior to the main event.

Judging by the reaction of the Junior School as they grooved their way through the gym, the girls successfully led their peers to that exact goal!

Check back next week for another edition of #SCSSpotlight, where we profile a different student, group, activity, or interesting event!
