Life at SCS. Get Excited!

At SCS, we are passionate about learning – and that learning extends far beyond the curriculum.

Our co-curricular and community programming is just as key to the SCS experience as the classes we offer. Spanning Grades 1-12 and catering to a wide range of interests and identities as unique as our community itself, our co-curricular programming plays a key role in helping us all to truly “get excited” about life at SCS!

The Daily Co-Curricular Experience

Co-curricular programming is an integral part of the overall SCS experience.

Before the bell rings for the first class of the day, many SCS students have already participated in an athletics practice, sung with a choir, or played with the orchestra. After school brings even more options to get involved, from our extensive athletics program, VEX Robotics, debating, chamber choir, and rehearsing as part of the cast or crew of a school play, to special interest clubs.

Lunchtime is for eating with friends, naturally, and also for learning and creating! Students participate in clubs and activities during dedicated time for co-curriculars. SCS’s many student-led committees, councils, and affinity groups also hold lunchtime meetings.

Go Compete: Sports at SCS

Opportunities abound on the field, track, court, and in the pool for every student to explore. Our athletics program embraces a philosophy of encouraging participation, developing skills at all levels, and building healthy lifestyles. SCS sports teams also win – a lot! With 40 teams in 13 different sports, as a school we are proud of both our commitment to participation and active fun, and our athletes’ achievements at CISAA tournaments, Metro Championships, and OFSAA.

Step Outside the Regular School Day

Experiential learning at SCS immerses students in authentic and dynamic experiences. Students of all ages are encouraged to think creatively, problem solve, collaborate with others, and consider varied perspectives. Regardless of the experience itself, the goal of our experiential learning programming is to allow students to come away with a deep and real understanding of what they have learned.

Opportunities include:

-Round Square and Young Round Square

-The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

-Annual grade experiences for every student from Grade 4 through to Grade 12

In the Lead

At SCS, leadership isn’t just modeled by one group of students. Our Leadership Program spans every grade level, and is closely aligned with our stated goal of developing and equipping courageous and adaptable learners who are empowered to make impactful contributions in their local, national, and global communities.

SCS students progressing along their personal journeys of leadership development are learning and understanding the core dimensions of effective leadership, including communication, collaboration, values alignment, and the need for reflection. In practice, leadership shows up in ways as varied as our students; there is no “typical” leader or leadership style at our school.

The House System

Our four Houses are a significant part of life here, and have been a favourite tradition since their introduction in 1960. Every student and staff member is part of one of four Houses – Stuart, Tudor, Windsor or York – and participates in inter-House competitions and activities. Displays of leadership, academic achievement, and participation in school activities are rewarded with House points. At the end of the year, the points are tallied and the House Cup is awarded!

The House System promotes interaction among students from different grades, and offers leadership opportunities while building school spirit.

School Spirit!

The extraordinary spirit of SCS is shared by students, staff, parents, and alums alike. A collective sense of pride is evident throughout the school day and beyond, especially in our inspiring assemblies, exciting House games, cheers, and skits.

Spirit Week allows our students to compete in friendly competitions and express full-grade pride. The school-wide event features a fun line up of activities and competitions, like lip syncs and locker decorating.
