What happens when a painting doesn’t go according to plan? In Gillian Shim’s Grade 11 Visual Arts class, unexpected mistakes during a portraiture project became opportunities for artistic discovery. Instead of starting over, students embraced the unexpected, transforming setbacks into some of their most meaningful and creative work.

As part of their math unit on displaying and interpreting data, the Grade 4s conducted their own sample group surveys in the Grades 1, 2, and 3 classrooms. After collecting their data, they created their own multiple-bar graphs to analyze their findings!

Looking back on an incredible night at our 2026 Formal! Here’s just a snapshot from the special evening as we head into the weekend. 💙

In Ms Chisholm’s art class, the Grade 4s learned about Canadian painter Mary Pratt, known for her photorealist still life paintings. Inspired by what they learned, the young artists then worked to create their own still life art. According to Ms Chisholm, an exploration of Pratt’s style helped students develop strong observation skills as they carefully studied everyday objects, noticing details like light, color, and texture. This built their ability to draw and paint realistically while encouraging creativity through choices in composition and subject matter. At the same time, the Grade 4s improved focus, patience, and confidence as they completed detailed artworks and learned to talk about their ideas using art vocabulary! 🎨

Before school was officially out for summer, the Grade 5 class highlighted some of their recent learning with the wider Junior School community. As they worked to gain knowledge about Indigenous Peoples in Canada, students were asked this driving question: “How did the first meetings between Indigenous Peoples and Europeans change life in what is now Canada?” (In Project-Based Learning, a driving question is the central, open-ended question that frames an entire unit of study and guides students’ sustained inquiry).

Part of the response to this driving question included an exploration of Indigenous artifacts and the corresponding meaning and cultural significance for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples in Canada. The Grade 5s then shared what they had learned with other students in Grades 1-6, and Junior School teachers too!

Summer was in full swing for our SCS Variety Program campers last week, as they enjoyed outdoor play, got creative with art and hands-on activities, and had an awesome trip to Eglinton Park! They also loved cooling off with the unicorn sprinklers in the Side Yard (a great way to beat the heat), designing bracelets, cooking with Chef Ngan in our cafeteria, and experimenting with Oobleck during the Scientist in School workshop. 😎🎨

And to top it all off, campers ended the program in style with a special Pajama Day filled with stuffed animal portraits, sparkly keychains, Pixar movies, and painted flowerpots. Talk about an action-packed week!
