As we celebrate 125 years of SCS, we`re revisiting the stories behind the traditions that have shaped generations of Clementines.

In 1948, graduating prefects set out to find a special uniform item that would distinguish members of their graduating class. Led by Isobel Ganton ’48, their search brought them to Simpsons department store, where they discovered the future Gold Belt in the last place anyone might expect: the curtain department. Yes, the iconic Gold Belt - originally called the Gold Cord - beloved, revered, and worn by SCS graduates for generations was originally a curtain tie!

Thanks to the creativity and determination of those students, a simple curtain tie became one of the most recognizable symbols in SCS history. Nearly 80 years later, the tradition is still going strong! #SCS125

Alum are invited to join us for opening night of All`s Well at Crow`s Theatre on Tuesday, November 24! The evening includes a reception in their brand new Cabaret space and a pre-show artist chat with playwright Erin Shields and director Jackie Maxwell, moderated by SCS alum Bryn Kennedy ’13, Assistant to the Artistic Director.

During Friday’s full school assembly, Melody FN. ’27 was introduced as School Captain for the 2026-2027 academic year and shared an inspiring speech on the power of curiosity.

She started by reflecting on a simple conversation she`d had with a friend on a summer afternoon. When her friend asked, “Imagine it’s your first time seeing this place. Wouldn’t it seem so cool to you?”, Melody initially dismissed the idea. But the question stayed with her.

This moment challenged her to look more closely at the world around her and reminded her that curiosity is not confined to the classroom. Whether questioning the weight of clouds overhead or learning about the glaciers that shaped the ravine beneath our city, Melody demonstrated how a curious perspective can transform the ordinary into something fascinating.

She concluded with a memorable message: “Spend just one minute every day, and let yourself find something small to be curious about, like the weight of clouds. I have a feeling that the world will be a lot more surprising and mind blowing this way.”

Thank you, Melody, for that thoughtful reminder to slow down, ask questions, and embrace curiosity as we explore all that the year ahead has to offer.
