The Gold Award is presented every five years to a deserving alumna, nominated by her peers, who continues to embody SCS’s values and stands out as a role model. This year’s recipient is Dr. Margaret Casey from the Class of 1955. For 25 years, Dr. Casey provided medical care to marginalized members of the Halifax community and, periodically, volunteered at medical clinics in developing countries. From 1995-2001, she served as the Director of Admissions for the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie. Dr. Casey has served on many health-related committees and boards throughout her lifetime and championed many community cases.
In 2005, she was made a member of the Order of Canada for demonstrating an outstanding commitment to patient-centred care and, in 2015, she was invested in the Order of Nova Scotia.
