In honour of National Volunteer Week, Principal Perry was inspired by Parents’ Association President Alissa Crean in this week’s Postcard. Alissa presented to the SCS community last week, highlighting the powerful role volunteering plays in building connections and leadership skills.

The Grade 3s recently embarked on the VEX Robotics science portion of their unit on Forces and Motion, as they explore how things move and interact! Through hands-on building and problem-solving, they are beginning to understand key concepts such as pushes and pulls, speed, direction, and how different forces affect movement. Students will design, test, and refine their own robotic builds, strengthening both their scientific thinking and teamwork skills. 🤖

Earlier this week, we celebrated SCS inspiration and creativity at our annual Grades 7–12 Arts Banquet! The afternoon began with a bustling student-run vendors market, where students explored stalls with handmade products, art prints, and jewellery - all thoughtfully crafted by their peers. Attendees then enjoyed a series of engaging workshops led by visiting professional artists, including drumming, collaging, silk flower making, and dramatic arts. The celebration continued with a delicious dinner, followed by a variety of fun, hands-on activities such as henna, pin-making, face painting, foil art, and more.

Earlier this month, the group of students who participated in an experiential learning trip to Japan reflected on the experience at assembly.

They shared highlights from their travels across Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, and Hiroshima, describing Japan’s respectful transit culture and drawing thoughtful (and very funny!) comparisons to Toronto’s more hectic pace of life. Students were also impressed by the country’s fast and efficient transportation system!

In Kyoto, they took part in a traditional tea ceremony, learning the importance of respectful cultural participation. In Nara, they visited Tōdai-ji Temple, attempted the “Buddha’s Nostril” challenge, practiced calligraphy, and met the local deer.

Their time in Hiroshima offered a more reflective experience. Students shared how learning about Sadako Sasaki and visiting the Children’s Peace Monument helped them better understand Japan’s WWII history and its continued focus on peace.

Overall, the assembly highlighted how immersive educational experiences like this trip can deepen cultural understanding and learning for our students.

SCS was alive with creativity during Sights and Sounds of Spring last Thursday! From stunning student artwork to memorable musical performances, it was a wonderful celebration of the talent and passion across our school community. 🎻🎭

This morning, we celebrated all of the amazing volunteers who make such an impact on the SCS community at our Volunteer Appreciation Assembly and Reception! Led by Community Partnership Leads Chloe A. and Simone P. (both `26), the assembly was an opportunity for us to thank our volunteers for the countless ways they contribute to making SCS a better place.

PA President Alissa Crean spoke to the full school, sharing some inspiring words about the powerful act of volunteering. “Volunteering is about showing up for something bigger than yourself. It’s about giving your time, your energy, and sometimes your comfort to help create an environment where everyone can feel connected, supported, and included…a strong community doesn’t just happen. It’s built, brick by brick, by people who have decided to contribute. Sometimes the most important things we do aren’t the ones that get applause and attention; they are the ones that we quietly show up for, do our part, and make things better for others."
